Many people take their hearing for granted. They know they’ll hear their alarm clock in the morning and that the kettle has boiled when they hear the “pop” of it turning off. However, for others, these everyday moments don’t always come naturally.

Across the UK, there are 11 million people with hearing loss  — around one in six of us. It’s a common and distressing health concern, as we need our hearing to carry out daily tasks, to socialise and to keep ourselves safe from danger. Therefore, it’s essential to visit a trained professional at Hearing Expert to determine the cause of your hearing loss — and the type of hearing loss you have

A hearing test tells us whether you’re experiencing hearing loss and at what degree. It also gives us a clear picture of your ear canal and pinpoints the type of hearing loss you have.

Hearing Loss Treatment

Before our expert team of audiologists can treat your hearing loss, we first have to determine the type of hearing loss you’re struggling with. This step is especially important during your hearing test, as with the right diagnosis, we can tailor the best treatment plan for you.

There are four different types of hearing loss:

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is a common type of hearing loss. It occurs when the cochlea in the inner ear is damaged, resulting in sound signals improperly transmitted to the brain. So sensorineural hearing loss changes your ability to hear quiet sounds and can reduce the quality of the sound you can hear.

Age-related hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, ototoxic drugs, Meniere’s disease and acoustic neuroma (a slow-growing benign tumour) are all types of sensorineural hearing loss. Once the auditory nerves and hair cells in your cochlea are damaged, they cannot regenerate so this, unfortunately, results in permanent hearing loss. Therefore, early diagnosis is recommended to determine the cause and allow us to provide suitable treatment options to improve your hearing. Treatment options include the use of hearing aids or cochlear implants

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss is another common type of hearing loss. The causes of conductive hearing loss are usually the result of a blockage in the outer or middle ear, preventing sound from entering the inner ear. These causes can include an ear wax build-up or ear infections. Conductive hearing loss causes voices and sounds to sound faint or distorted. However, many cases can be treated medically or surgically.

Mixed Hearing Loss

If you’re unlucky enough to get both, mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. No job is too large though and we’ll have you feeling more like yourself in no time.

Auditory Processing Disorder

In some cases, the outer, middle and inner ear appears to be undamaged and functioning normally. However, there is a condition that affects the brain and ear coordination, which means you don’t hear as well as others. We apply the umbrella term “auditory processing disorder” to define this type of hearing loss.
