Do I Need a Hearing Test?

Hearing loss does not affect everyone in the same way, so it’s important to take note of any differences in your hearing, no matter how small they may be.

Whether your hearing loss has been gradual or you’ve suddenly woken up one morning to find it’s difficult to hear, our professional audiologists in Wirral will accurately diagnose and treat your hearing loss problem.

Do You Treat Sudden or Gradual Hearing Loss?

Both! We’ll determine your level of hearing health and go from there. Sudden hearing loss can happen instantly or over a few weeks, and it can be caused by earwax, trauma or an infection. However, if you experience sudden hearing loss, contact Hearing Expert or your GP as soon as possible. Some cases of sudden hearing loss can be serious, so if you wait to seek proper medical advice, it can potentially lead to permanent hearing loss. Our audiology specialists can conduct a detailed hearing test to accurately assess the degree and type of hearing loss you have and advsise on the best hearing loss treatment for you. If necessary, we will refer you onto your local ears, nose and throat (ENT) department.

Hearing loss can also occur gradually over time, often due to age. As your hearing slowly deteriorates, your brain tends to pick up the slack by realising the information coming from the ears isn’t as it should be. As a result, lip-reading becomes more important. Before you know it, you can only hear clearly if people face you and the room is quiet. Socialising is much more difficult, so it can become more of a struggle to enjoy the things you once did. Therefore, it’s inevitable you’ll start to feel low. Is this you? We can help with a hearing test.

Do I have Hearing Loss?

Usually hearing loss, especially ‘sudden onset hearing loss’ is obvious, one morning you wake up and it’s difficult to hear, usually affecting one ear.  This type of sudden hearing loss is often indicative of excessive earwax build up and a simple wax removal procedure is carried out at our hearing centre in Wirral and the problem is gone.

What Symptoms Suggest I Need a Hearing Assessment?

There are different types and various causes of hearing loss, but some of the signs that you should book a hearing check include:

  1. You often say “pardon” when chatting or ask for the other person to speak slower or more clearly. It’s increasingly difficult to hear on the phone and everyone seems to mumble more — almost like you’re wearing headphones.
  2. When you’re trying to communicate, background noise in the room — such as a TV or radio — is distracting, making it difficult to hear in groups or even one-to-one.
  3. You guess at what people are saying or you try to fill in the gaps that you can’t hear. Sometimes, you guess right and other times, people look at you blankly wondering what you are talking about — because you guessed wrong.
  4. Social situations are no longer fun. Instead, you find them frustrating and tiring.
  5. You seem to like the TV louder than everybody else.
  6. You experience dizziness or balance problems.
  7. You hear ringing or buzzing sounds in your ear. This may be tinnitus.

If any of these signs seem familiar, it’s time to book a hearing test.
