At Hearing Expert in Wirral, our ear wax extraction service to fix your ear problems is quick, painless and effective.
While ear wax may not look attractive, it’s your body’s natural defence mechanism to keep your ear canal lubricated and clean. This sticky substance traps harmful bacteria from entering your body, so it plays a vital part in keeping you fit and healthy.
Ear wax isn’t a bad thing — it exists for a reason. But it can become a problem if there’s an excessive amount. In the UK, an estimated 2.3 million people annually have issues with blocked earwax that they can’t remove with home remedies such as warm water, olive oil or over-the-counter ear drops. So, it’s important to know why this happens and to get medical advice to treat it.
The skin cells in the external ear canal have special glands to produce ear wax — also known by the medical term cerumen. This cerumen then slowly makes its way through to the outside of your ear. At this point, the ear wax will either fall out on its own or when you wash.
Occasionally, excess ear wax can build up and block the ear canal. Sometimes, people naturally produce too much ear wax, or they have narrow ear canals, which are harder for the ear wax to move through. However, other common causes of excessive ear wax include:
Often, people use “poking tools” such as cotton swabs, keys and bobby pins to clean their ears. Poking inside the ear can have the opposite effect to that intended and cause damage. Instead of being removed, the ear wax can gradually move deeper into the ear canal, which is especially dangerous. By poking in your ear, you risk piercing your eardrum. Also, as you push old ear wax backwards, it can become impacted, which can cause pain and affect your hearing. Impacted ear wax can also stop fresh ear wax moving through the ear canal and trapping harmful bacteria. As a result, you can be left vulnerable to harmful bacteria and infection.
The frequent use of earbuds, in-ear headphones, earplugs, ear defenders and even hearing aids can also contribute to the build-up of ear wax. Aside from carrying dirt and bacteria, these ear accessories can also increase ear wax build-up. As our ears are designed to clean themselves, wearing earbuds can inadvertently trap ear wax, preventing it from exiting the ear. In turn, this can cause a build-up of excessive ear wax.
Cases of ear wax impaction are more frequent in older adults because ear wax becomes drier as we age and so harder to move through the ear canal. Additionally, people with learning disabilities or dementia can struggle with excessive ear wax as they are unlikely to ask for their ears to be examined when symptoms begin. Annual ear examinations in these vulnerable groups could identify excessive ear wax before it becomes impacted.
Excessive ear wax can sometimes lead to an array of problems, including itchy ears, earache, temporary hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and even repeat ear infections. However, once the ear wax is removed, these problems usually improve.
Whatever the cause of your excessive ear wax, this condition can be effectively managed using a curette, microsuction or ear syringing (also known as ear irrigation). At Hearing Expert, we offer a same day ear wax removal service.
